Artist's Description
I allowed the oil paint to sit on the palette for days until it was partially dry, making it extra thick and goopy. I used a palette knife to keep mixing the thickening paint, and to apply the paint to the canvas for extra texture. Years later, I came back to the once very square and rectangular image and decided there was something missing... Triangles, treasures and a hint of spontaneity. I mixed acrylic paint with modeling paste. This produces extra texture as well as a matte finish, creating a nice contrast with the shiny finish of the oils. I also added some gold acrylic paint to call in the presence of the Divine. I paint as a prayer, as a way to bring beauty from the spirit realm into the earthly realm. This image helps to connect us in our daily routine to the remembrance that life is sacred, precious, ever-changing and our destiny is ours to breathe.

I have never seen artmaking as a choice, but rather as a necessary and obvious part of living. What I am creating is always changing, but my commitment to creativity is an inevitable constant. The way I see it, the process of artmaking helps to integrate the endless information coming into the brain with the already present and always working imagination. It helps to process past experiences and vision future ones, all the while giving my mind, body and spirit a pathway to actually BE in the present moment of creation. As I paint, I notice my breathing slows down. I enter a zone of concentration that last hours longer than I can concentrate on any other activity. Even though my left arm is doing most of the work and I am often for hours...
