This painting is about wonder. As I stare at it now, I marvel at the interplay between these three lightbursts and how each of them shines brighter in the light of the others' presence. While the pallet is somewhat basic, (a semi-neon offshoot of the primaries) I used a glazing technique to layer translucent colors one over the other in a way that brings out the dynamic dimensionality of what might otherwise be mistaken as ordinary. This is the kind of magic I see when people interact from a deep state of presence, of being in touch with their inner light.
I go to Burning Man because it's a place where so many lights are shining, adults hard at play. So much magnificence happening at once, it is often hard to settle down in one space.
One afternoon I was deeply needing some grounding. I was about to pull myself away from the people and retreat to my tent, hopeful that I would be able to find myself again. Right then, a beautiful woman started playing her elect...
I have never seen artmaking as a choice, but rather as a necessary and obvious part of living. What I am creating is always changing, but my commitment to creativity is an inevitable constant. The way I see it, the process of artmaking helps to integrate the endless information coming into the brain with the already present and always working imagination. It helps to process past experiences and vision future ones, all the while giving my mind, body and spirit a pathway to actually BE in the present moment of creation. As I paint, I notice my breathing slows down. I enter a zone of concentration that last hours longer than I can concentrate on any other activity. Even though my left arm is doing most of the work and I am often for hours...
